These are a few of my favorite things…

Who can forget Julie Andrews singing this song, ‘These are a few of my favorite things’ in The Sound of Music? When I was teaching, I was asked one year to give the teacher speech at the Eighth Grade Celebration. I decided to make up my own version of this very song and of course sang it in front of all our eighth graders and their lucky parents. Actually, after my serenade, several parents congratulated me: not for my singing ability, but for the brazen nerve to sing!

I interspersed my students’ names and some of the special memories we had shared throughout the year. Our vice-principal, who was about one week away from the loony bin, complimented me on my feat and said she wished she had even half the nerve I did to get up in front of the student body and entertain them.

As I look back on my family memories I can feel a tune coming on which sounds very similar to the aforementioned song. So, without further ado, here goes:

Wisdom and kindness all coming from Abby

Dad’s hugs and his kisses and love with no boundaries

Steak ‘n Shake burgers with onions and mustard

These are a few of my favorite things!

Sissy’s sense of humor and endless dancing

Kevin’s hospitality especially at Thanksgiving

Candy and chocolates and sweet gooey donuts

These are a few of my favorite things!

Nieces and nephews who laugh at our stories

Endless psycho babbling done over the phone

Mary and Beatrice who taught us dysfunction

These are a few of my favorite things!

When there’s sad news, when there’s problems

When I’m singing off key

I simply remember my favorite things

And then I don’t feel so bad!

I know: as I told my audience years ago, I will not quit my day job! But you must admit, you enjoyed it especially the part where you were imagining my out of tune, screeching voice! Remember: no animals were harmed in the singing of this tune!
