One summer my Dad and sister Abby decided it would be a great idea for me to spend the summer with Abby in Des Moines. I had just completed my junior year of high school and my sister was in college taking some summer classes.
Off we went to find an apartment, learn how to budget our money and work at whatever jobs we could find. I found a job at Henry’s Drive Inn and my sister worked in the collections department of Time Magazine, bugging people on the phone for payment. If you know my sister, you can attest to the fact that this was not a good fit. My sister is so nice that she often apologized to the people for bothering them.
I was busy taking orders, frying burgers and hoping that there would be a few Deluxe Burgers left over for my purchase to take home.
We had fun, learned the lessons of hard work, and enjoyed our freedom from the two mothers. And I found a city I would call home for the rest of my life. Little did we know what would await us upon our return to where we grew up.
